If like us me hadn’t noticed this, then you’re probably a man. But now that we’ve made you aware that the buttons on men’s and women’s clothes are on the opposite side you’ll probably notice it. There are some widely held beliefs and some wild theories on the custom but none really explain why women’s shirts button opposite to men’s.
The theory that’s probably close to the truth is that women’s clothes button up in the opposite direction because they’re designed to be buttoned up by a servant. If you can picture a time when a lady would be dressed by a maid, then you’ll understand that putting the buttons are on the opposite side gives a right handed servant easy access. With that theory, men’s buttons are where they are because men have always tended to dress themselves.
