The dark past of Oradour-sur-Glane, France
The french city of Oradour-sur-Glane in west-central France suffered a horrible massacre in 1944. On June 10, 1944, the Waffen SS entered the city and massacred men, women and children, in the end killing 642 people. They were murdered by machine gun, being burnt alive and other horrendous acts, but no one is quite certain why they chose this town. Perhaps it was to make an example of any community that resisted. A new town was built nearby and the original town was left standing as a permanent memorial to those who lost their lives.
